Yes, Democrats and Gun Control Advocates Really Do Want To Take Your Guns Away

This week Democratic gun control advocates, including Hillary Clinton, revealed their true goal: They want the ability to revoke anyone's right to own firearms, simply by putting their name on a list.  There would be no due process whatsoever involved.  This measure would have allowed politicians and bureaucrats to deny a basic constitutional right to any individual or group they might choose.  It would have permitted this or any future administration to create a special section of the "no fly list" in order to disarm gun rights advocates.  In fact, it has already been suggested that all members of the NRA should be classed as terrorists. (Example 1, Example 2, Example 3)

If this bill were to pass, and there were to be a way for the government to instantly disarm everyone in a group or in an area, how long do you think it would be before this power were to be used?  Answer: Not long.  We have already seen a dishonest politician (now in prison!) order the disarming of everyone in his city after Katrina.  In the middle of one of the worst disasters in American history, a US mayor used precious resources to illegally disarm an entire city (except for the criminals, of course).  As a direct result, many states have passed laws prohibiting any attempt to disarm people legally allowed to own firearms in time of disaster or emergency.  None of these

safeguards would protect gun owners from federal action under this law.  All that would be needed is a pretense - such as a series of national terrorist attacks.  Nothing in the bill would prohibit an administration from placing all Americans on this list and instantly making all guns illegal.  Would this actions be challenged in the courts?  Of course!  However, while the court battle goes on, the guns would continue to be seized.  This is exactly what happened in New Orleans.

Contrary to the false statements by Democrats and gun control advocates, the NRA does not want terrorists to have firearms.  In an historic move, Republicans and the NRA offered a constitutional bill designed to keep terrorists from getting guns.  IN FACT, THIS BILL IS THE ONLY ONE THAT WOULD HAVE HAD ANY CHANCE OF STOPPING THE ORLANDO ATTACK.  This bill would have frozen gun sales to anyone currently on any terror list or no fly list and anyone who had been on this list within the last 5 years.  The FBI would be notified and would have 72 hours to go to court with evidence that this individual presents a threat.  The standard of proof would be civil, not criminal - meaning that if the majority of the evidence indicates that the person should not be trusted with firearms, the ban would be made permanent.

Opposition to the Democratic bill proposal came, not only from gun rights activists - but from other groups such as the ACLU.  The ACLU is not by any means a pro-gun rights organization - but they have grave concerns about the Democratic bill violating not only the 2nd Amendment - but the 5th and 14th Amendments as well.  

Sadly, this effort does noting but confirm the warnings voiced by the most radical gun rights advocates.  It poisons the well, making it impossible for the two sides to agree upon reasonable and constitutional gun control and gun rights legislation.  Gun control groups constantly accuse the NRA of opposing "common sense" gun laws - yet in this case, where the NRA did just that, these same groups demanded much, much more and worked to kill the only "common sense" bill that would pass constitutional review.

While many, if not most, Americans will not remember this battle come November - gun owners surely will.  They will be energized by this attempt to enable government to take their guns away without any due process whatsoever.  They remember the gun seizures in the wake of Katrina - which continued in spite of court orders that directed they stop.  They correctly will see this as an attempt to enable their constitutional right to own firearms to be violated at any time - and America's 50 million plus gun owners will turn out in droves to vote for Donald Trump.
